Yesterday, on a Sunday afternoon, I said good-bye to my 8th grade kiddos (officially high school big kiddos) on their very last field trip. My students are all, of course, special in their own way, but this particular group of kids were there since I began my work with youth three years ago. They were my very first students.
I was fresh out of college, starting my first salary job, and they were 6th graders at the time. It’s no wonder why these group of kids holds a special place in my memories: They were the guinea pigs of my lesson plans, showed me how to be more hip with certain terms like “making buckets” (which, by the way, means successfully putting a basketball in a hoop), and life lessons that are too numerous to list. Let’s just say that these lessons include things like, be rebellious and never stop being a kid in the adult world…
Therefore, since they hold a special place in my memory, what’s the best farewell gift for them? A memory stick. Better yet, a ninja one.
In the memory stick, I included photos of our group, a parting note from myself, and some tips on how to be successful in their education. These tips include “How to Take Cornell Notes,” which you can also view on my previous blog post here.
Perhaps these flash drives could be a good gift idea for the teenagers or “ninjas” in your life too! I know I’m glad to have gotten them as a way to say farewell to my teenage ninjas before they go off to high school.
